Default 1985 G2 starting/motor questions

Hello,

I bought my daughter a 1985 yamaha 4 stroke to plow around. It runs good it has a new fuel filter , carburetor, tune up etc. The only thing it that seems strange to me is how to go.

1st turn the key all the way like your cranking it
2nd once it is fully cranked it pulls forward
3rd give gas while the key is fully cranked to turn on motor and apply the gas in order to go and be able to release the golf cart.
Once I let go of the gas the motor turns off. For me to go again. I need to turn the key fully and apply gas at the same time.

Is this normal??? Tried calling a golf cart store but they acted disgusted that I would want to fix up a 1985 golf cart. And wouldn’t even let me talk with the mechanic.

No. That’s not right at all. Can you take a picture of the engine compartment, maybe someone swapped the engine with something else?

And nothing wrong with a G2. Awesome carts, I’ve has several G2/G9’s very solid little tanks

Other possibility if it is the original engine, the pedal switch has gone bad and they’ve bypassed it, and rewired a bunch of stuff that didn’t need to be rewired to avoid replacing a $5 limit switch…

This is what I was thinking. But you're right it could be a clone engine in there. Curious what the deal is.

A genuine yamaha one is a lot more than $5. It is $60 + shipping from partzilla. Part# J41-82550 . Chinese unit on E Bay $42 On both my yamaha G 14 and HD D4 carts when the stop/start switch was just starting to fail there was intermittent starting. Obviously when they totally failed it was an easy fix. In both cases we wondered if the ignition switch was the culprit. By passed it to make sure all the ills were due to the start stop switch. At the end of the day both carts were converted to key start more due to using them like cars here on the island.

Here is the picture. Where do I need to look at for the pedal sensor switch?

If you look around the pedals you’ll see the rubber floor mat has seams there. Lift it up and pull it out, the switch should be right there in front of you.

Thanks will check it out in the morning. Does that look like the original 4 stroke?

Yea that’s the good news. Stock motor and system.

Just need to get it rewired correctly, and you should be good to go. From the sounds of it, it runs fine, just needs to be unscrewed from previous owner.
