Default Solenoid Resistor and Diode 36v.

Hello everyone. 1994 Club Car controller cart. Restoring this cart have pretty much been all through it. Question: Will be installing new solenoid when it arrives. Have read elsewhere that resistor and diode across solenoid terminals are not necessary. Is this true? Also, are resistor and diode directional? Can't tell from the old ones I removed.

Thanks for any and all help. Looking forward being a part of this group! Thanks for letting me join! Will gladly help others when I can.

On the newer cars there is a diode in the controller so not always necessary on the solenoid but for your vintage I would fit. The resistor is non directional but the diode is directional with the silver band towards the (+) post (small posts).

Thank you Golfdog. Got the cart running fine now, but only after removing resistor and diode.
Would the diode installed backward cause it to blow out micro switch? Got anxious and tried that because new solenoid has not yet arrived (seems I don't need it now). Would you at this point install a resistor and diode on the solenoid? Thanks Golfdog!

The resistor and diode both have a purpose. The resistor can be installed in either direction. It's intended purpose is to allow a small amount of power to pass through and keep the capacitors in the controller "charged" at all times. Without the resistor, every time the solenoid clicks on you're sending a huge rush of power into the controller and forcing the capacitors to charge instantly. They're not designed for this. Prolonged usage of the system without a pre-charge resistor can damage the controller. It's very important that you use it. As for the diode, it must be installed with the stripe installed towards the positive side of the activation circuit on the solenoid coil. Failure to install the diode correctly will result in a short and a blown out micro switch. The diode's purpose is to protect the solenoid from voltage spikes when it engages. It's important, but not nearly as important as the pre-charge resistor.

Thanks Dawg. Makes a lot more sense now. Gonna order resistor today!

Ummm?? Thank you for explain how they work! Sorry for being so new but, where do I install a diode and where do I install a resistor? Let alone a Precharged resistor?? Any advice would be helpful. I have a 1998 Ezgo Txt 36 volt with a new solenoid on the way. I think that was a diode running from large post to large post on old solenoid.

The solenoid has 2 big posts and 2 small posts. The precharge resistor goes on the big posts and the diode goes on the small posts.

OMG I can't believe only 3 years ago I would ask something like this.
