High Speed club car motor
Put in a high speed motor from cart zone, awsome speed but now having some battery charging issues.
Everything is stock other than 4 gauge wires and motor, the 16hp special from cart zone. Cart is an 01 48volt series.I do have 12inch low profile tires. No lift. Cart ran 14mph before tire upgrade, 16.5 after tires and 26 after motor. Problem seems to be battery life, after 9 holes starts shuddering on take off then moves on fine. Also seems to take a long time to charge, and when charger does turn off the battery light fades in and out. Will a new controller help? Was thinking about a 500 amp!? |

Re: High Speed club car motor
Shuttering is often cause by bad connections or bad batteries themselves. That along with the extended charge times leads me think you may want to check your batteries. Charge the batteries, wait about 1/2 hour and then take a voltmeter and test each battery individually. Post your results and then it gives us a place to start....this would be step 1

Re: High Speed club car motor
Just got back from checking batteries, Fluke says 8.2 to 8.3 on all with 50.4 total.
But, started charge at 7:30 last night and when I went to check, charger still running after 11 hrs and charger showing 11 volts. |

Re: High Speed club car motor
before you checked the voltages...did you let the batteries sit and stabilize for about 15 mins or 1/2 hour with the charger turned off...and then take readings??
If so, I have seen stated on here that sometimes a charger will run in excess of 12 hrs. plus and be OK...but you get shuddering so I still suspect a battery or terminal. You can next also load test each battery individually...put the meter on each battery individually and accelerate the cart and drag the brakes to create a load....then monitor for lowest voltage reading...compare all readings and see if one or two are much lower than the others If you look at the chart in the liunk below, 8.2 to 8.3 volts is only 70% charged. If this was taken at end of charge cycle..you have very very weak and sick batteries. If not let the charger go tyo end of cycle and take readings again and compare to the chart http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...-readings.html<<-----click here |

Re: High Speed club car motor
Just went and checked cart this morning, charger off, orange light on,readings from left to right 8.22,8.17,8.31,8.26,8.17,8.21, with a total of 49.28.
I think ya'll are right, weak batteries? What is ya'lls opinion on the new motor, think I should upgrade the controller? |

Re: High Speed club car motor
It looks like you have solved your problem, The readings, after charging are 70% at the best. I suggest a 400 controller as minimum but with the new motor a 500 would be a "hit it and hang on" result. Of course, with the new batteries necessary, hitting the lottory would be of some $$ help also.
