Default New batteries, now a dead short. ???

So...after a long winter I discovered that my batteries were stone dead and would not take a charge. The cart worked fine in November and had not been charged since, my bad. I just replaced them with 6 - 8 volt Interstate batteries. I drew a wiring diagram and took pictures to make sure everything would be reconnected exactly as it was. After making all the connections, when I touch the final positive connection to the battery terminal I get a substantial spark as though there is a dead short. I've triple checked the cabling and everything is in order. Key is in off position. Ran fine when I parked it. Any ideas would be deeply appreciated.

Can you post a picture of the wiring?

That last cable always sparked for me. A little freaky the first time, but nothing crazy. A trick using a light bulb to eat up some juice has been posted a few times. The suggestion to post a pic is probably a good idea just to confirm your wiring is correct, but if you put them back as they were....

I will get a picture on here as soon as I can. (not home right now) but I assure you it is wired exactly as it was before the swap. Engineer by trade so this is certainly in my skill set. One further piece of information that may help....if I put the tow/run selector switch in "tow" position, no spark and I could connect it. I'm hesitant to do this and then flip the switch for fear of destroying something like an expensive controller.

DUDE! You aren't supposed to play with wiring without putting and keeping it in tow.

The run/tow switch should be in tow before you touch any wires on the cart.

Doh!!!!
Stupid is as stupid does I guess.
So, if I connect the batteries while in tow and then switch to run, the world will not end?
In my defense, (what little I have) I never did get a manual and this is my first cart.

Let's hope so. From everything I've read, doing nearly anything with wiring has to be done in tow, or controller fries.
