Default Battery Discharge

Hello. I have an 07 Precedent with 2014 Trojan batteries. I bought the cart last year, the batteries hadn't been taken care of...but with the help of this site I was able to get everything up and running with no problems. We've taken it on several trips and taken it for very long drives.

It hasn't been used a lot in the last 3 months due to schedule and weather. I've kept it on the charger and taken quick 10 minute rides at least once a month. I noticed after last months ride and charge that my battery meter started showing yellow 5 days after the charge. I went for a quick trip around the 'hood on Friday and plugged it back in. This morning, while walking the dog, I noticed that it was back to yellow..turned the key so the voltmeter would come on and it showed 49.7v. After a full charge it will usually show 50.7-51.2. So the battery has dropped - at best that's a 3% drop in just a few days. I checked the wiring, nothing appears to be loose and the water levels look ok. The weather has been pretty cold here, which should SLOW the rate of self discharge, right? The radio is disconnected and the lights are off. I know self discharge is normal, but this appears to be fairly accelerated - what else should I check? Thanks!

well considering they are almost 3 years old, and you said they were not taken care of, I think you are lucky. I don't think that's a big problem but seems normal considering the background you gave on the batteries. I doubt its your charger, but I don't think there is anything you can do trying to go from 49 to 50-51 volts, your batteries are just older now

49.7 volts is equal to 75% SOC. You probably have a bad battery that the cold weather made worst. Check your individual battery voltages and you might find one that is lower than the rest. Check the stamp on the neg terminal of the batteries to verify the age of the batteries. How does it drive? If it meets your needs then maybe you don't have a problem.

that's a good point, I assumed all his batteries were starting to go, but he may have just one. He should probably load test them if he is able. BTW he said the batteries are from 2014

Keep in mind that battery voltage is lower for same SOC in cold weather so your batteries may be as good as they were in warm weather.

You mentioned lights and a radio, do you have a voltage reducer or are you using 1 battery for accessories?

Good point, although as far as using 1 battery to power the radio it probably wouldn't work. His lights would but they would be really dim lol

Unless he has converted it to 6 8 volts an 07 precedent is built for 4 - 12 volt batteries.

That's true good point, I get a feeling it's not converted Which may make it easier to hook up the accessories but I think the 8 volt system is better

It's a 4 x 12 battery pack. The light kit does run off of a single battery (#4). I haven't setup a reducer yet (spring project hopefully), so the radio runs off of a single battery. I did extend those wires and put on some alligator clips though, so I could move the radio around every once in a while. The radio isn't connected all the time. The only thing that is constantly connected is the battery meter (the voltmeter only cuts on when the key is turned to "On"). I'll test the batteries later on tonight.

Here's a link to the battery meter that's constantly connected
