precedent light relay, is it necessary?
I just came across this situation. The cart's headlites would flicker and work sometimes not always. I opened up the access panel to the key switch area, to get to the lite pull switch. I found a relay that someone installed, for some reason??
the relay was arcing inside its female base, and this was causing the lites to work sporaticly. My questions are, why is this relay here? Is it needed? It is aftermarket, and the wiring job sucks. I removed the relay nd wired the headlites direct, and the lites now work. However, i am not sure if i have now made the brake lites not work? The tailites are led bulbs, and the tail lites work, but i have no brake lites. I AM NOT SURE IF THERE ARE BRAKE LITES OR NOT! I did not check them before i started. the relay says : SONGLE SLD-12vdc-1A. 40a 14 vdc Do you think this relay was necessary for brake lites? Why is it 14 vdc? Do led tail lites need more than 12 volts? Right now the head and tail lites work fine, but if i have disconnected the brake lites by removing this relay, i need to replace it. Any help? |

Re: precedent light relay, is it necessary?
On lots of dc electric parts they will say 14 volt, or 28 volt for 12 and 24 volt components. Charging systems on most 12 volt vehicles charge at 13.8 to 14 volts. Just like your 48 volt cart charges up to 51 volts or so when fully charged.
I cannot tell by your photo, but they may have had the head lights and brake lights on a timer. 30 to 60 sec. If the timer was not rated at 10 to 15 amps it would have had a hard time with head and brake lights. Thus it may have burned the contacts inside. |

Re: precedent light relay, is it necessary?
The purpose of the relay is to avoid sending high current loads through the headlight switch.

Re: precedent light relay, is it necessary?
Gorno, I have never seen the relays used before. Since i have seen many installations without them, are they necessary?
Since i removed this one from the system, do you think i will have any problems? |

Re: precedent light relay, is it necessary?
Lots of those aftermarket light switches come with a relay to keep you from having to send high amperage through the light switch. Instead, the light switch simply acts as a "remote" to turn the relay on and off. As far as the brake light question is concerned, pull up the floormat and look at the brake pedal and see if there's a brake light sensor under there.

Re: precedent light relay, is it necessary?
ok, i just came across another one of theses exact same relay!! This is on an 07 precedent.
Can someone tell me how to hook this up? It says "NOVITA" RL45 spdt It has terminals marked ; 85,86,87, and 30. On terminal 85, is a single real small gauge wire going to one side of the light switch. on 87, there is a small red wire going to the other side of the lite switch. There is also a second small red wire going to the dark blue and also the red in the 12 pin connector?? 30 has 2 red wires, one goes to the dark brown in the 12 pin and the other heads down to the front lites somewhere. Then there is 86, that has lots of wires. There is a black that goes to the front lites, another black that goes to the black with white stripe in 12 pin, another skinny black that dies somewhere in the sheathing going to the headlite switch, and one more wire that is melted in half, and i don't know where it goes/ anyone? |

Re: precedent light relay, is it necessary?
That is the standard pin identification for what is commonly known as the "Bosch type relay" (although Tyco owns the relay business from Bosch now).
They are widely used in automotive, good things to keep around when You want to use smaller switches and run smaller gauge wires to the dashboard and still switch large loads. You can get a 5 or 10 pack with socket harness and they cost less than $2 each. Here is a great reference on many different ways You can use the Bosch relays: http://www.the12volt.com/relays/relaydiagrams.asp |
