Just an update: I used my (5) 6 volt batteries and a normal marine 12v battery on my cart up until today. It worked fine. I monitored voltage and it always seemed normal.
To charge this "42" volt pack, I would disconnect the 12v and connect it to a normal charger. I would connect the other 5 plus the bad battery to my 36v powereise charger. I decided to go ahead and change to (6) 8v Trojans. My cart was still working, but the run time was dropping down to where it became to much of a nuisance to charge this way. So, it did work for me. I didn't tear any thing up. And I think it would have continued to work for a couple more months, but it was quite a pain to charge.
