1972 Caroche Brakes
Hello,
We have an old Caroche (1972 we believe based on serial) we just pulled out of the barn and have been trying to get running. We just threw some 6v batteries in it and it moves fine forward and reverse. Problem is.... no brakes. So, I pulled the master brake cylinder (pics attached) that says "WAGNER LOCKHEED" and have some questions: 1) Is this stock with the Caroche? Or aftermarket? I can not seem to find reference. 2) Maybe someone has a parts manual they can share? 3) Can I rebuild the brake cylinder? Where can I buy a rebuild kit? 4) Maybe I need to just buy a new cylinder? Looking for advice on what to do! :) Thanks! mark |

Re: 1972 Caroche Brakes
I can't really help you, but I own a 1975 Caroche that I'm probably going to get running in the next 10 years or so. I have read in the archives that there is a car master cylinder that replaces the original. I think it was a 1940's Ford or Mercury part. They are common on the vintage street rod sites like Speedway Motors (I've ordered from them many times in my circle track days). Several of the members have restored their Caroches and if you do a search in the Club Car section of this forum, it will pop up. Type Caroche in the search bar. Brakes are always shot on these when people start to restore them.

Hello,

I have added a couple more pics. I realized that I was searching for "wagner lockheed fd-8656" because the number was hard to read. It is in fact "FD-6566" and after searching for that I actually get decent results. Is there a reason I should not just try to find a rebuild kit and rebuild it rather than buying a new cylinder? Can I maybe ditch the hydraulic brakes all together and just use cable brakes? This is my first time fixing brakes so I am just learning :) Really we are just going to use this cart to move quickly around the property.... nothing fancy. It just needs to work :) |

Re: 1972 Caroche Brakes
ok.... so with that number (FD-6656) I was able to track down on the forum and online what "i think" i need.
1963 International CM110 Brake Master Cylinder Kit: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/UBP2...ndex=Universal I am assuming I will need a brake hone tool too and will need to watch a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzioBB7KZXU BTW attached is some picks of the cart for those interested. mark |

Re: 1972 Caroche Brakes
I think you will like the Hydraulic brake system once you have had a chance to drive your Caroche.
Now that I have completely restored my brake system, if stops better than my 2006 Club Car DS, and better than my 2013 Club Car Precedent. And requires far less Pedal effort. I chose to put in a new master cylinder and bought new wheel cylinders also. My main brake lines were Stainless steel and in fine shape, but I had to make new ones for each side that actually go to the wheel cylinders. The parking brake is actually cable driven, thus the third pedal in the car. Good luck with the project, and keep the pictures and questions coming. Aflyer |

Stan,
I found mine by just looking up the number on the old Master Cylinder casting. George |

greyhavenmotel,
If you decide you want to replace the master cylinder you can get one here: \https://www.summitracing.com/parts/AGB-MC4360 Or with that part number you may be able to find it locally. I also have two new wheel cylinders that I never used, if you are interested let me know. Aflyer |

Re: 1972 Caroche Brakes
@Aflyer
Just got a chance to look at your post. Thanks for the link! Yeah that Raybestos looks just like the one I removed and cheaper than the NAPA one I saw! It also seems a bit easier to just replace that to rebuild at this point. The rebuild kit is $20 but with shipping NAPA quoted like $35. I also checked Harbor Freight for the tool to scrape the inside of the cylinder which they did not have. Seems like with all the time and effort involved in a rebuild i might as well just buy new. Thanks for the help! mark |
