Default 1974 melex 202 hot coil resistors

Hello,
I have a 1974 Melex model 202.i believe it is wired correctly. The guy I bought it from had 3)12v bats wired in. I corrected the wiring and installed 6)6 v bats. The cart goes forward and reverse and goes quite well. However as soon as I depress the peddle the coils get extremely hot. I have cleaned all contacts. Including the slide contacts( which were very dirty , the last for full throttle contact had a pitting on the edge. I don't know what other things to look for at this point. Any ideas?
