Problem with a 91 des that just died
My first post so thanks in advance for your help!
We bought a 91 ds a few years ago and it has worked well for us around the farm. Replaced batteries a few months ago and it has been fine since then. But yesterday my son brought it back and told me the following this morning: 1. He smelled something 2. It wanted to continue going forward when he stopped it and 3. Turning the key off had no effect on it do he set he brake and left it This morning when I checked it, it was complletly dead and the battery charger had no effect on it. I don't see anything visibly wrong other than a slightly melted wire going to the motor. Any suggestions on where to start? |

Every connection has to be very tight.Any connection that may be loose can cause a melted wire,so that said that wire is the start of your issue. You need to tug every wire on the cart and make sure everything is tight and no corrosion anywhere.
Post wath you have done and if things got better. Tom |

Re: Problem with a 91 des that just died
Thanks for the reply! i was getting a little concerned! i checked the connections and everything seems ok. The wire with the melted covering is from the end of the large coil to the motor. Nothing seems to be wrong with the coil.
I have disconnected the battery but I noticed that even with the switch off, sparks still fly when he terminals touch the battery. The switch seems to work as I have checked it with a resistance meter. Would a stuck solenoid be a possibility? I still don't know how to explain the current draw with the switch off though. |

Are you dealing with a 36 volt with a controller?

so your saying you have coils behind the batteries? So that is a series cart.Does it spark with key off and in nutrual? It should not spark in that possition. If it does then jack up the cart touch the cable to the battery and if the wheel moves then you have a closed solenoid.

Yep, that's my cart! I will try tomorrow but I am sure that is the problem. If so, just replace the solenoid?

Ok but try to charge the batteries,or put in reverse and reverse only works off 18volts.see if the tires will spin. But I'm thinkin solenoid is burnt closed. Also a meter set on continunity will tell you if open or closed.
