Steering wheel column
I have a 2004 CC. I want to put a carbon fiber dashboard on it. If I can not get the steering wheel off. Can I pull the entire column out?

Re: Steering wheel column
Search this site. There are several remedies for getting the wheel to come off.
But I will tell you, I'm running 50/50 on being successful.... One idea I read once was to remove the steering wheel nut and add a washer. Then replace the nut and tighten it down as much as possible. The idea is that this will cause the seized up connection between the shaft and wheel to break. Then remove the nut and washer and try to pull the steering wheel off. Best wishes. It is a pain to work with older steering wheels. |

Re: Steering wheel column
Remove the plastic front cover on the steering wheel, exposing the nut and shaft. Back the nut out so that the nut just covers/protects the threads on the end of the shaft. Spray the shaft with a little P-B Blaster (you can find it at Home Depot) and let it sit overnight. Now, you're ready to try to get it off. Next day, put your knees behind the steering wheel and apply pressure with your knees to the back of the steering wheel. Place an aluminum or brass block on the nut and smack the heck out of it with a dead blow hammer. Just make certain that the nut is completely covering the threads on the end of the shaft. The point is you don't want to damage the nut or threads of the shaft and you want to make sure if/when the wheel breaks free, you don't find yourself wearing it. You might have to push VERY hard with your knees while you whack the block with the hammer and might have to try this several times. I've had success with this on a '88, '99, 2008 and 2011. Good luck...!

Re: Steering wheel column
Thank you for both suggestions. I have seen several of the other post. My problem is, the previous owner other the cart had some work done to it. There is a chrome shaft over the steering column. So I know it has been taken apart before. Whom ever did this work screwed up the nut that holds the steering wheel on. The threads are messed up. My only solution is to re thread the shaft if I take it apart by forcing that nut off. Any suggestions please

Re: Steering wheel column
All I can say is.... If the goal was to replace the dash panel, but the dash panel does not have a slit below the steering shaft opening, I suggest you create one. and slide the panel over and around the steering shaft. I did this on the cart I was unsuccessful on, (removing the wheel.)
Otherwise, I'd look into replacing the shaft and wheel. (Although, I've never looked into the cost of that. |

Re: Steering wheel column
Would it be possible to re thread the shaft if I force the steering wheel bolt off? Or how much work is involved with or can you pull the steering shaft out, from in bolting it from the linkage below. Kind of trying to avoid the cost of replacing the shaft at this time.
