Default 1988 ezgo 36 volt

neighbor has 88 model marathon that runs and pull fine in the yard to do his yard work wiht the exception that it doesnt like a incline at all,,,i am talking barely will crawl, yet runs 11 mph on flat ground,, any ideas and just to be honest its doesnt appear to be worth spending much time nor money on in my opionion,,but saves him a step are two,,,, new batterries,,cables good,but there is a metal box mounted down low that I believe houses a resistor,with 4 wire terminals leaving it that the post are terribly rusty and it gets hot,,,help if you can please

Default 1988 ezgo 36 volt

I’d start by cleaning all the connections. “Volts” gives you the speed. “Amps” gives you “torque”. At full throttle the resistors should not be heating up, as they are bypassed (when wired correctly) at full throttle.
If you’re getting heat in that area then you most likely have a dirty/corroded connection that is not allowing enough amps to get through and making the cart not want to climb a hill.

those connections at the resistors and also on the motor look terribly rustyed up, may have to spray them down with pb blaster a few times, keep them fingers crossed none break off. would the resistor assembly still be available?

The resistors don’t go bad unless they break.... with that being said. The bolts on the motor are attached to the brushes!!! Hold the lower nut with a wrench when turning the upper nut!
If you need a resistor... I have an extra set of each style... some people search for special studs for the resistors if they break. I just replace with a stainless bolt/washer/nut using some “No-Ox”. (Non oxidation sealant for wiring) you can buy another name version of it at any hardware store.

You can even rebend a resistor coil if you break it(near the ends). they are just different gauge thickness solid wire. be careful wrenching on the posts as the fiber board they are mounted to will crumble if you put too much torque on it. its an extremely simple system
