I can answer that since I am in the golf cart meca.

6 8volts we see about 40 miles with new batteries, the general rule around here is a loss of between 5 and 10 miles a year in range as the batteries age.

8 6volts, we see about 50 miles with the same loss as the years go by.

Life wise, the 8 6volts tend to last a little longer, 6 months to a year. The 8 volts last about 3 years and the mileage has decreased to the point the cart cant do the range required or have an out right battery failure.

How well do the 8 6volts fit in the area. I know my 6 8volts are pretty tight.

The Yamaha Drive battery tray used for 6x 8v is the same tray used for 8x 6v, and yeah, it's a tight fit.

can you fit 8 6-volt batteries in an older Club Car DS?

I seriously doubt it, since the batteries sit along side the angled frame rails.

You have to modify the battery box and get a battery fill system since 2 of the batteries go under the rear cowl. Here that conversion is done often to extend the range.

The reason 8/6s yield more range is because they add up to more amperage capacity. Remember that when you are shopping any battery - size matters.
