Honda gx630 throttle mod
I recently built a cart, and learned a lot along the way as well as used my automotive back ground to modify areas I thought needed a little change.
Out of the box with the factory Governor still in place I was very disappointed with my big block kit, but I talked to a friend who told me just to bypass the governor spring with a piece of coat hanger, yeah yeah I know it will work just fine, but I found that the engine hesitated a bit in returning to idle. I made sure it wasn't binding up in any way, but nothing made it a smooth return to idle, so I took a piece of throttle cable and carefully swaged fittings onto it so that it is the exact length to pull the throttle yet smoothly return to idle. One tip I would say is to use a zip tie to hold the throttle down while setting the cable length, I just zip tied it to the dip stick. I didn't find any pics of how to do this on here, so I figured I'd share mine for other beginners like myself. |

Re: Honda gx630 throttle mod
Nice work. One question. How do you cut those cables and not get frayed ends? I've used brand new side cutters and still get at least one cable that comes undone, then I can't ever push the cable into the sleeves or brackets. Thinking I need some new tools! LOL

Re: Honda gx630 throttle mod
Definetely time for new tools, but a little trick is to tightly wrap the part you want to cut with electrical tape, or heat shrink then cut through the tape/ heat shrink with a sharp pair of cutters then remove the covering from the wire. Sometimes I solder the ends after to keep them from fraying. Hope that helps, I just figured it's a lot better than using a coat hanger which doesn't allow flex on return to idle which causes a delay in returning to a smooth idle.

I agree with Airbagged......I too use heat-shrink tubing on those cables and it seems to work quite nice.

Re: Honda gx630 throttle mod
If you have a air grinder with a cut off wheel or a dremel tool with a cutting disk. Cut slow.

Re: Honda gx630 throttle mod
These are all great tips. Yeah, thinking I need some real USA made side cutters this time....that China crap just sucks. Never thought of the solder idea.

Re: Honda gx630 throttle mod
Try using a tool with a shearing action instead of a compression action.
