Can you use 6volt batteries on a 8volt system

Yes, but you have to run 8 of them - 6 X 8 = 48. Club Car uses 6 - 8 volt batteries. EZGO uses 8 - 6 volt batteries on all their 48 volt systems, with the exception of the new RXV...
