A guess on that one is the connecting rod ovaled out and seized. Broke the rod that took out the cam. The lawn mower racers tell that tale of too many revs on the stock rods.

This engine was on a stock larger riding Simplicity that an older farmer had

I think he said only had 800 hours, but hard hours

It feels pretty smooth and even

I'm taking the belt off tonight and I'll check again

Personally I wouldn't replace it unless its an OEM and they are sort of high in price. I don't like the cheap ones. I ordered one for a friend of mine and it broke after a few months.

You can rebuild it. It should be a 28 degree. You can see if its 28 or 36 degree without removing it. Mark is on the inside where it slides up to differential.

I have rebuilt many. As long as you don't have lots of wear where the belt runs and center part is good.

Take it apart and check to see if the center part doesn't have deep grooves cut in it from running it with worn ramp buttons too long.

What you going to do with the MCI engine you are doing away with ?

I'll probably sell the stock engine since it runs completely fine

I wonder if I should install a high rev kit

There are a few kits out there, upto $175 and some as low as $75
