Who has started new Food Plots

What are you planting , im going up to my lease in Ga
to plant next month for a spring / summer plot.
Been reading up on Buckwheat mixed with Sunflowers
and Iron peas. I think this is what im going with .

Also building some feeders trouff and barrell to take up.
Talkin with another guy on a different forum.
He has helped me with makeing the barrell feeders
useing 35 gal. drums mounted on 10' legs of emt conduit.
The metal 35 gal,drums I got from a Quick Lube place.
they get there grease in them, and they have a bladder in them
that holds the grease so its not messy with oil all in them.

You can get leg kits for the conduit from basspro for around 25.00
the 1" emt slides right in the brackets
Sure beats spending $125.00 and up for a tri pod feeder

Not sure what we will plant this year. Last year was our first for food plots on our lease. We had OK luck with Buck Forage Oats on our big plot. They didn't rip it up to much but we had plenty of deer come in.

I'm going to land this weekend for 4-5 days. I want to start preparing soil and get a sample taken. I was planning on soybeans, peanuts, and sunflower. Sunflower for the birds. I have some plots still in duranna clover and chicory from last year and year before.
I saw your other post about turkey hunting, wife and I are going try get us one or two of them also. Good hunting, Mike

I like the Duranna, How hard was it to get established (in other words did the deer tear it up ) how long does it take to germinate .

Mike I think the barrell tripods ( Homemade ) are the way to go too.
Im going to try and make 1 a gravity feed also.
Im thinking they sure will keep the coons out, unless they learn how to shimmie up the emt legs. Trouf feeders work, but the dang coons have a hay day with them too.

How big are the plots you plant in that, Is it purty draught tollerent
our lease is in S. Ga. last year we didnt get much rain at all
in fact I think all of Ga. was this way which even made the deer hunting
tuff on every one all over the state of Ga.

Y'all still have cold weather up there dont you even now ?

I bought my BFO from Gander Mountain. Our bigger plot is about 1 acre. Not sure about it being draught tolerant.

I guess BFO is more of a "hunt plot" you plant it early September (up hear) and it's supposed to be at the proper growth when hunting season starts and last sometimes through winter.

and ya it's kinda cold still........ 38 yesterday

Hey guys

Looks like you guys are getting fired up for the season. My experience with Spring/Summer plots have not been that good. I like clover plots seem to be the best. One thing I would recommend is to disk or till plot. Let the weeds grow for 2 weeks and spray the heck out of it. Work it up and sow your seed. Remember the fertilizer and lime. My plots in spring would always get grown up with weeds and never very good. I probably will just do fall plots from now on, but you never can tell.

Thats what we are going to do like you mentioned above, disk the ground
up good put some lime out and fertilizer disk it in or turn in .
I just Hope we get some good rain to get it started after we have worked
it and planted. " Praying for rain" this year.
We are also putting some feeders and Minerial licks out to aid in the effort.
I talked to a fella the other night on the ph. He was telling me of a proteen
pellet thats about 16% but to mix it 50/50 with whole kernnel corn.
This I hope keeps them somewhat off the new food plots untill they can start
getting established. ( I hope it works anyway)

What kind of clover do you plant ? are you useing Duranna too ?
I hope we have the time when we are up to get some sorgum planted too Id
sure like to get the doves comming in and feeding on that.
And bust some caps on them in early season , if you can get enough of them
they are real tastey plus fun to shoot.

Man I cant wait to get back up there, Do y'all put feeders out as well
what do you prefer in them, just checking for anything to feed .
I have seen deer tear up one feeder eating it all the time and yet on a different place on the lease not touch the same feed. Finicky eaters LOL

BCW it took two plantings to get my duranna established. Make sure on first planting that you plant something like winter wheat that will grow fast so deer will leave duranna alone. In the middle of last summer I was cussing about how the drought had ruined my clover but now its looking good. It made an amazing recovery.
I don't use feeders(not there enough to keep filled) but do use mineral blocks and mineral licks. Licks are what I call the process of putting minerals in the ground and deer will actually lick the soil, paw it up, dig holes in it, etc. Hogs will hit the licks and blocks too. I have found blocks a hundred yards from where I set them out. Hogs will push them all over the place.
Wife and I went to camp Sat thru today. It was windy most of the time and couldn't hear the Tom's, but had fun just being there.
I just ordered some Va. peanut seed. I have some corn and spanish pnuts too to plant. I bought the Va. nuts so we can enjoy some boiled gobbers in August/sept. Good hunting, Mike

Aint nuttin better then them boiled gobbers, got a friend that sells them
road side, all different kinds, Plain, Cajun, cajun with taters, corn, small pickles , and Hot on the tounge and mouth kind too. So hot that if you have any sinus problems you wont when you eat these LOL yer nose will drain 4
a week.....

I have a home made recipe for mineral licks, makes a Bunch at a little $$
if I can remember I will post it, actualy I got the recipe from QDMA forum
it takes a while to work but once the deer get it going they'll dig it fer awhile almost to china
we are going up to the lease in about 3 weeks, cant wait to get gone.
Hopefuly if I have the time I'll get to do some turkey hunting while up there.
A week end just ain't long enough .
Got to much to get done and be pressed for time as it is.
