48 to 12V stepdown yamaha drive 2 with new lithim
I need a little help.
I have a used yamaha drive 2, that I just replaced the trojan 8v's with a 48v single lithum (015ah). Cart runs great. BUT, I have no lights. Can someone recommend a stepdown converter from 48v to 12v? I bought one on amazon, but it needs a 48v switched input (from the key) which the drive2's don't have. Also....some hack has been messing with wires, so many are cut in many places. Super frustrating. Has anyone made this conversion then added a stepdown? Additional info....previously the lights were run off two of the 8v batteries. I have those red and black wires available. Can I just get a stepdown that will work with yamaha then splice to those? Thoughts? Thanks! |

You can just connect the switched wire to 48v, or wire in a toggle switch to turn the converter on/off.
Yes, you can splice in to those wires. |

Another option is to attach the trigger wire to the small wire on the solenoid that has power only when the key is turned on.

Thanks all.
I'll give it a try and let you know. I can't believe what a mess the wiring is in this cart. |

Reporting back!
The voltage regulator install went really well. I removed the old voltage regulator (factory I assume) and drilled new mounting holes for the new one. I wired the switched wire to the solenoid as suggested, added a fuse box (just because I was working on wiring) and all is well (with that at least...new question being posted shortly. Ran the black back to -ve post. I can't believe how much power the cart has now with the new 48V lithium. What a transformation! I've put ~60miles on it since the install, and I absolutely love it. It's also great to have bluetooth BMS and bluetooth on the Navitas, so I can fine-tune/tweak things. One other thing I did, which I was hesitant to do with the old batteries (due to range loss), was lower the tire pressure to smooth out the ride some. I'm happy to answer any questions about the install, or post pics in the future to help others if needed. Thanks again for your help. |

Re: 48 to 12V stepdown yamaha drive 2 with new lithim
I’m just about to install a reducer with switch wire.I wasn’t aware I could run from the solenoid instead of locating switch wire at the key switch.
Are we talking about the 2 small wires on the solenoid and one will be hot when keys turned to on? I just need to use a multi meter to see the 48volt wire? Thanks Mike |

Yes, two small wires. One of them will be the key switched 48v, the other, a controller switched negative. You want the 48v one.

Whats the quickest way to find which of the 2 wires on the solenoid is the 48volt key switch with a multimeter?
