Have you tried using the software built into WindowsXP. Windows Movie Maker. I realize it doesn't have alot of features but you can do basic stuff like cutting out parts and inserting other videos. I think you can also add sound.

I use Pinnacle Studio 9 to edit my videos. It allows you to capture video right from a DV camera or analogue source, edit it, and export it rtight back to the camera, to a DVD, or to a file of any type. It supports most file formats. I got my copy at Best Buy. It came with a PCI card that has a DV (firewire) port and analogue inputs and outputs for around 80 bucks.

It is fairly simple to use and features many transitions and titles to start with.

Mine came with my video card. You should be able to pick it up at any computer place: BestBuy, Office Max, LIMEWIRE, UTORRENT, etc....
