Default 48 volt battery layout question

I have a Bad Boy MTV (not Badboy Buggies). I am replacing the batteries for the first time and am confused by the way they are connected to each other. Would someone please explain why they were connected this way?
It is a 48 volt system with 8 - 6 volt batteries. 2 in front, 4 under the seat, 2 in back. The batteries in the back that are hooked - to - confuse me. Is this correct for 48 volts? I get a 48+ volt reading across the controller connections.

It looks to me like the battery in upper left corner of your drawing is reversed. Every other battery is connected + to - in series as they should be.
