Since we don't know old the batteries are, it's hard to make a solid recommendation.

The best way to test them is to hook a meter to each battery, one at a time, then record voltage wile going up a hill. If you have one bad battery, and you are limited on funds, you can buy used batteries that are the same age, and same Amp - hours.

This pack is loosing 30 of 50 volts under load since there is only 8.3 v per battery to start we may assume 3 or more batteries have issues.

Qualified yes. It'll run, but it's not going to last very long.

If you turn the 500A XCT down to about 300A and turn the max RPM down to about 6000 and keep your foot out of it, it'll probably last the rest of the summer, possibly a year or more, but you'll want to have a better motor ready to install by next spring.

In other words, to go to a 48V battery pack, you will eventually need a motor that can handle 48V, but you can spread the expenses over in two steps.
Batteries and 48V charger now (maybe a solenoid and a few cables also), and better motor later.

8V batteries have both terminals on same side, so longer interconnecting cables are needed and if you have something other than the MZJ400 solenoid, you'll have to get one for 48V.

How tall are your tires? 18" is stock height.

Your motor peaked at 7,107 RPM, which is 30.6 MPH on stock height tires.

The field is being weakened down to a low of 1.6A, so motor heat will be an issue with that motor and field map. Of course, if you get an aftermarket motor, it'll need a different field map.

Yes I have stock 18” tires. I will eventually get 20-22” tires. Will there be any advantage to 48V over 42V? Any suggestions on batteries and motors. How are the crown batteries?

20" is about as tall as you can go without lifting cart.

48V has 16.7% more torque and 16.7% speed than 42V. Also, it'll take 16.7% fewer amps to do the same amount of work, so the motor, controller and cables will run cooler. In addition, the cart won't slow as much on hills because the torque increase is throughout the RPM spectrum, and the motor will be RPM limited by the controller, so on lesser inclines, there might not be any slowing.

Unless you need extensive range, six 8V batteries will probably be best. Six 170AH 8V batteries gives about the same range as the standard 36V battery pack.

The motor needs to match the cart's setup and what it will be used for.

Crown batteries have about the same reputation as Trojan batteries.
