I'm not an expert, but I believe when you have batteries connected in series they will try to charge a low voltage battery equalize each other. So yes a low battery can draw the others down. If you have one with high voltage the others will draw from it and draw it down.

That is a much better idea but I'll leave it to others to comment on the Powertron batteries as I know nothing about them.

They cant try to equalize in series, thus you can read ea battery while they are connected, but as mentioned it will throw off the charging, probably not as bad as the bad battery is.

If they were parallel then you wouldnt be able to read the individual voltage without disconnecting them and the bad one would pull the others down and the old ones would pull new one down.

Great info. I believed for years they would try to just as others but then observations and readings don't add up so I've been wondering. Is it really as clear cut as that? "They just won't?" That would change a lot in my view and maybe things would start making better sense.
A couple more things I'd like to know is where the best place is to put 1 or 2 newer/better batteries and is it beneficial to rotate them? For me it seems the end batteries degrade faster. I had to add two newer ones and I put them on the ends. If I have a lower one, like .05V less I like to put it in the middle for some reason. No idea what's best and that could be completely opposite for all I know.

this is on 6's
