Default How Many Charging Amps Needed

Hi BGW Folks,

I Have acquired a 97 txt that I am rebuilding from the frame up. It came without an engine, so it’s a perfect platform for a swap.

I have a predator 670 on order (no idea when it’ll actually come), but while I’m waiting I’ve been doing my homework on an eventual charging system since I know that the Predator doesn’t put out much of anything.

I’ve been looking at the Performance 670 alternator kit, which is really nice and would provide all the power I would need, but adding the price of that to the price of my predator, gets me to almost $1,400-$1,500. Right now, Northern Tool has a Honda GX 688 for a little over $1,400 in stock, and it puts out 17 charging amps out of the box.

Sooooo…..is 17 amps enough to charge the battery and also run a set of street legal LED lights, plus maybe some LED accent lights and a sound bar? OR, am I better off waiting on the Predator and adding the alternator?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

Another option at that price point would be a B&S Vanguard with more options for more rpms and power over the Honda.

Are you considering installing the OEM starter/generator for the Ezgo so you can start and stop.
That would provide plenty of charging amps (@14+-)

No. This was clearly a parts cart, so most of the original engine was missing, including the starter/generator.

An interesting discovery a Lifan LF2v78-3dqsc comes up on line for $808.14 from Discount Cleaning Products . com. This engine is 24 hp with a 1" X 3" output shaft and 20 amp charging. The engine is real enough BUT is the company at such a low price. They are supposedly located in Stafford N.J Too good to be true ?

My cart has the Predator v-twin....I used the Vegas Carts install kit and also purchased and installed the v-belt pully for the motor shaft.....have not put on an alternator yet....the stock charging system powers l.e.d. headlights, tail lights, and a 48" lightbar....if the day comes that I need more charging, I can throw on a single wire alternator....
