Default Melex Steering Fluid Change Help Please

Hi guys,
I am in need of help on my +/- 1992 Melex 152. I have changed the Differential Fluid, replaced the Motor with a re-built one from EMP, and upgraded to custom made 2 gauge cables. All of this has gone pretty well for a "newbie", in great part due to the info on this site..........thanks!

I now want to change out the old Steering Fluid and replace it with Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer. Unfortunately, I am not sure where the Drain Plug is. I bought a service manual from Vintage Golf Carts, but I think that the drawing must be of a different model than mine. Intuitively, it would seem that the "Steering Slack" adjustment screw would come all of the way out and allow the old fluid to drain. There is a plug half way up the right side of the Steering Box that would seem to be where the fluid is added as well as determining when it is filled adequately.

I would appreciate any info from those of you that are familliar with this cart.

Many thanks in advance!
Brian

There isn't a drain plug. If you want to change the GREASE you will have to disassemble the steering box, clean it out and replace the grease with new.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. The Service Manual lists both a Drain Plug and 90 weight oil. (?) They also state that the Drain Plug Hole is also the Oil Filler. What type GREASE do you suggest? Can I get in much trouble taking this apart enough to clean it out and refill it?
Thanks again!
Brian

Hi Roady,
I would immagine that this manual was translated from Polish as the grammar is somewhat off. I think that they must have screwed up and misnamed a plug. You'll see why in a moment.

"Steering Gear Dissasembly Fig.11.C-3:
-remove plug (item4) and drain oil.
-unscrew counter nut (item 6). remove gasket (item 7) and remove plug (item 5)
-remove rubber cap (item . loosen nut (item 9) and remove screw (item 10).
-remove screws (item 11). cover plate (item 12) and gasket (item 13)

I don't really want to take it apart very far. I just want to dissasemble it enough to change out the fluid.

Steering Column Assembly Fig.11.C-3:
-put bearings on steering shaft (item1)
-slide steering shaft with bearings into housing (item 2).
-install plug (item 5) tightening untill end play of steering shaft is not observed.
Note: Do not tighten plug too firmly to avoid increasing steering gear resistance.

*****: Here they call item 5 the same part that was item 10 in the dissasembly
intructions......from the same illustration!*****

-install gasket (item 7). tighten counter nut (item 6) and protect it from loosening by bending.
-reinstall driver (item 3) and oil seal.
-screw plug (item 4) in housing (item 2).
-fill housing with any SAE 90 automotive lubricant. Put on gasket (item 13) and cover plate I(item 12). Tighten up with screws (item 11).

NOTE: Lubricant level should not exceed the drain plug hole level when steering column is in working condition.

Lubrication, Fig.11.C-3
Steering gear is factory filled up with lubrication. Check lubrication level once a year. To do that remove plug (item 4). Lubrication level should be on the plug hole level."

As best I can figure out, the drain plug must be the steering slack adjustment screw (item 10) and the Filler Plug must be the one that is about half way up the housing on the right hand side. I think that it also requires SAE 90 Oil. There may be a worm gear or something else in there that requires grease. This is all new to me though, so I was hoping that you or someone else had actually done it. I saw in some old posts that you had/have a Melex 152 also. I guess that I can cautiously start taking it apart (with good notes). Hopefully, I won't get into too much trouble! :)

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. Any info is much appreciated!
Regards,
Brian
