Default 1989 ez marathon gas

I have a 1989 ez go gas marathon 2cycle cart. I just got the cart so i don't know what has been done and what hasn't. Seems like when your climbing a hill and going it starts to lose power. I have looked the fuel filter and it has fuel in it. The butterfly on the carb is loose( should it be?). Or what else could it be? thanks much help is appreciated

Well there could be many reasons including the fact that it is just worn out. The first and most important test is to determine the compression ratio. Without that number everything else is merely speculation.

Same as a car.get a compression tester, screw it in place of the sparkplug, and you crank the engine.you should get at least 100 PSI.

98 isn't ideal, but it should run.Mine was running on 80 pounds.you had trouble getting it to wind up, but once it did it ran great up or down hill as long as you kept your speed.

Anyhow, I wouldn't go for the rebuild just yet.Check simpler things like the fuel filters, fuel lines, the downtube in the fuel tank, that loose butterfly in the carb, and remove and dismantle the carb for a good cleaning.Carb cleaner and an air compressor are the best.
