Blowing fuses

I am new at this, first of all I cant figure out the year, and ez-go cant either... it is 70323 I2bI92 one said early 70's one 92, but is around a 77 from diagrams I see because I have a blocking relay. Second I got this for free and it needed a top end rebuild so I did it , painted it and now we want to ride.It keeps blowing fuses , and the motor runs slow at full throttle ( I cleanded the carb 3 times, but the wire that was grounded to the motor melted and the regulator got hot, so when you let off the gas it blows a fuse.I have looked at the wiring diagrams and I dont have the blk/wht wire that looks like a ground and goes to the armature... Is my regulator shot ? so I figured the blk/wht wire is just a ground. Thanks for your help

pics will help alot, you say you have a 1977, but your mod# says its a 1992.
if you could please post a pic of your cart, we could all get started helping, there are a lot of really smart guys and gals on this site..

Wal is right I see 92 by your numbers. Is the starter/generator on top of the engine with a belt? This will get us started.

If you have a blocking relay you are mid 70's. The mid 70's carts had an internal starter / generator so just confirm that you do not have a black generator sitting on to of the engine with a starter belt going to the drive clutch. (BTW I think that you have to have a certain number of posts before you can upload images so that will come later).

I am by no means an expert on the pre 80 2PG engine but with a few exceptions, like the external generator and the electronic ignition they are pretty similar and in any case it's only nuts, bolts, amps and volts.

I think you have two issues and we should address them separately. This first issue is the fuse blowing. You say that the ground strap has melted and that is not correct. The 2PG needs that ground otherwise it will try to find another ground and fail. As simple as this sounds this may be the cause of your problem. What I would like you to do first is to follow the negative from the battery, it should go to a ground point on the chassis. Remove any cables attached here and clean the stud and the chassis down to bare metal. Clean the cables lugs and bolt it all together. There should be three cables, one from the battery, one to the FR switch and one to the engine. I suggest that if that cable is damaged just buy a braided ground strap and replace it. Make sure you find a solid bolt on the engine to mount it to. Try that and report back.

Just out of curiosity, when you rebuilt the engine were you aware that the piston has to go the right way around? If the ports in the skirt are facing the exhaust your engine will just not run right. If you not sure you do not need to disassemble the engine. Remove the spark plug and the exhaust pipe and look in the cylinder with a flashlight. Turn the engine over with the clutch and hope that you do not see the fuel port in the skirt.

Thanks Dave , will do. It has an internal generator and the wire that melted was a small one that went to the top left of the regulator.I will look at the piston because I might have done just that even with pictures.

Thanks Dave, it went rather well as I went through the wiring and of course they moved stuff , so I put it in the right place.When I put the positive terminal on the battery it started up all on its own and later after adjusting the carb it was just idling, then it went really fast on its own so I took the battery terminal off and it kept runng fast with the throttlein the idle position and my son freaked lol.When we got it shut off , found out a wire came apart so we fixed that and when I put the cart in forward or reverse it starts and idles... isn't it only supposed to go if you step on the gas? Took it out for a spin and it doesn't go to fast, but that might be the carb.The old coil was shot so I put one on for a ford , is that ok because its kinda warm ?

OK big progress here. It sounds like your microswitch on the throttle is jammed shut which is causing you to start and idle. The switch is inside the engine compartment at the end of the rod attached to the throttle pedal. It may simply be out of adjustment but a quick inspection with an ohmmeter will resolve that.
There is nothing special about the coil so if whatever you have is working then it is the correct coil.

Yeah, and that switch was the last thing I took off and checked for continuity, and it was fine worked only when it was let out.
