Default 2003 G22E Armiture Brush Springs

I recently removed the armiture brush springs assembly along with the brushes to clean them. When I go to put it back together it seems as if two the springs that hold the brushes in place have lost all their “spring”. Picture attached.

A few questions:
1. Is this normal and common?
2. Any suggestions on where to get new springs? My local shop will only sell me the entire brush assembly and even that needs to be special ordered.

Thanks in advance.

Those brushes are gone. They should be much longer so that the spring would contact them. The springs may be ok but they look like they were wet and are rusty.

Wow, that can't work...

1. Answer is no
2. You can/should purchase a new holder/w spring assembly

But when looking on your picture, it seems there is one winding
missing, so you could try to load the spring with one more turn to get
full tension!

Volt, a spring in that position can't load anything... look at my pic of the Hitachi motor i'd took apart. All springs had at least 3 windings and would load the brushes up to the end!

I agree that those springs are marginal but windings don't just disappear. Those were weaker springs to start with. New brushes are much longer than those. It would be a good idea to replace the springs too - I agree.

Enclosed a pic of a new holder/spring assembly. Even without brushes each spring is under tension up to the end of the brush channel...
