1989 Marathon Rebuild/Upgrade Project
Hello!
I have been reading lots of great information here on this forum for a while and have finally decided to pull the trigger on renovating/upgrading my golf cart. I've had this cart for about 16 years and it has been through numerous paint jobs, modifications and upgrades. Seems like recently there has been a huge surge in the number of upgrades/parts for the older carts and I finally got the wife approval for a little upgrade project. Ok. Here is a picture of my cart. I pulled out the old batteries yesterday (after 6 years of use) and got a new set of Trojan 105's. I like these batteries due to long life and reliability. I ordered a new cable set which is a habit when I buy new batteries. On to the good stuff. Here are the parts this cart is about to have added: 1. New steering wheel. 2. Brush Guard. 3. Rocker Panels - Black Powder Coated (shown in silver). 4. Trailer Hitch. 5. Renegade Rims/Lo Profile Tires. 6. Voltage Converter. I am really excited about the voltage converter. I have always used 2 batteries in the past for the lights but that used to kill one of the batteries quicker than the rest so this should be a nice change. In my next post - I have a couple of questions for some of the more experienced cart owners out there. |

Re: 1989 Marathon Rebuild/Upgrade Project
Couple of questions for the experts.
1. I have never replaced any of the electrical parts other than the solenoid and was curious as to any recommendations about parts that might need to be replaced? 2. The motor is the original and works fine but going up hill can be a little slow. Is this normal? Would a new motor make going up hill noticeably better? Thanks for any information and looking forward to participating in this forum. |

Re: 1989 Marathon Rebuild/Upgrade Project
Most that follow this upgrade path do so with a new controller (400A+) capable of 48v. Followed by adding 12v of batteries and a way to charge the new 48v pack or you can do a work around ala gornoman until you get a 48v charger.
The new 400+ amp controller and 48v is a real nice kick in the pants for torque and speed and all utilizing the stock motor. |
