Did you do a spark test using an actual spark tester? Doing the old fashioned "lay the spark plug on the manifold" will tell you if you have actual spark and will help diagnose a no start condition. But a good spark tester will show you what the quality of the spark is.

This is the one I use. It's adjustable so you can set the gap. It's black in color so you can see the spark very easily. And it's much safer than the old fashioned method. They are less than $30 at your local parts store.

I use the Harbor freight one all the time. For the mere sum of $3.99 you can't go wrong

Spark is intermittent at slow speeds using the spark tester and misses and backfires thru the carb. Have installed a new OEM CDI.
Could it be the pickup? r/w to b/w = 335 ohms
shouldn't it be higher? 500 to 600 ohms?
Its the only thing I haven't replaced

Cmon guys, help me out here.
The Yamaha Pulsar coil should be 350 ohms + - 20% according to a Yamaha service guy
Mine reads 330 ohms.
It still doesn't start promptly.
The only thing I have not replaced is the Starter solenoid and the foot switch. At very slow speeds it pops and sputters but otherwise runs good once it starts.
Its got the local guys here stumped.

I had a G8 doing the same thing. The owner of the car had adjusted the throttle cable incorrectly causing the carb to always be open. This caused two problems. The first was hard starting because the carb was open. The second was popping and loss of spark at low speeds. This was because the pedal switch was killing the spark while trying to get the engine speed low enough.

What did you pay for your replacement carb? Is it OEM?
Does it run any better with the muffler detached?

Thanks for responding,
I'll try adjusting the throttle cable again.
It does pop and sputter at slow speeds.
The carb is after market from Amazon. Paid about $30.
Tried hooking the old CDI up and it behaved the same way.
New CDI
New coil
New carb
New voltage regualtor
New plug
New fuel filter

Air box is tight.
It backfires with filter disconnected.

I have never seen a $30 carb that works right.

My question was regarding the muffler. Does it run any better with the muffler disconnected?

new carb, old carb same results

Are you suggesting I remove the muffler and try it without it?

Additionally, adjusting the cables and accelerator switch got better results.
It runs as it should, starts properly when I remove the drive belt.
Once I replace the drive belt, it is slow to start...sputters and back fires then grabs and runs great. Its just not reliable when starting from a dead stop.

By the way, thanks for staying with me on this.

More information.
Same problem w/ muffler detached.
Same problem w/ air filter detached.
Have adjusted throttle cables every way I can think.
It only pops and sputters when under load. In neutral it seems to start and run smoothly.
