1979 Harley Davidson golf cart engine
I'm rebuilding the engine and notice some play at the crank shaft I can move it about 1/16 both way is this normal or can I shim this somehow?

I'm looking at my '71 service manual, and it states .001-.005 end play for the crankshaft. 1/16 is .0625, so yeah, you've probably got too much play going on. The manual also describes how to measure endplay and shimming to within tolerance. Since the shims were only .002 each, you would need a boat load of them. I recommend you read over the service manual correct for your model year, and measure the endplay accordingly.

I have the 1963 -1980 manual and they also state the .001-.005 end play and say to use shims. I see Vintage carts lists shims @ .002 and .010"s

I rebuilt a Harley engine with excess play in the crank. It was so bad it wore grooves in the inside of the crankcase but it still ran. It was a 1976 model and I'm sure it ran for a long time that way. After I finished the rebuild (I hope it is still running) it ran perfectly and probably will for a long time. That was over or near 10 years ago!

I rebuilt the crank shaft and engine to factory specs. I had to use a new rod bearing and separate the flywheels. I'm not sure the lower rod bearings are still available and I have one more to rebuild when it gets warmer.
