GX390 Club Car Want RPMs for More Speed
So I have a 1986 Club Car Carryall/DS, 22" tires, 2013 Real Honda stock GX390 from a DeWalt pressure washer, running nicely. Tops out at 17MPH. Has plenty torque. I want more RPM and on a budget so I can go faster than the electric naysayers. I have the 4-pin (rev-limited to 4000 rpm?) coil. What do I need to bump up RPM? Do I need to change flywheel and coil to get the RMP's? Once I can make the RPM's, I feel like I need to make it handle them without floating valves and such. So will the real Honda GX390 handle maybe 5,000 RPM with just some valve springs? If so, which ones? I can build an engine, but I lean on those that know the real Honda GX390 since I have never fooled with one.

You could get the non limiting coil from NRracing for the revs BUT Honda or not I would change to a billet connecting rod. If the fails it usually destroys the entire engine. P.S. Some higher ratio rocker arms add some nice kick over 4500 rpms.

Re: GX390 Club Car Want RPMs for More Speed
So the stock rod won't handle 5,000 RPM? Oh well; it won't be the end of the world if the motor fails; Duromax 18 is $320 on Amazon with the normal exhaust flange and 10-bolt crank cover, but then I'd be right back where I started. I'll definitely consider the billet rod, but MIGHT just take my chances without it.
What valve springs would ya run with a 5,000 RPM max, with and without the high-ratio rockers? I have 2 brand new old-style coils that are single-wire, not rev limited, but the engine won't run right with them. I'm wondering if they have to be matched to the flywheel? I opened up the spark plug boot of the 4-pin coil and found there is a 10K resistor inside it but no resistor in the old style single-wire coil plug boot. Perhaps I should run a resistor plug with the old style coil? |

The flywheel you have is then UT2 type. To run the earlier coil you need a UT1 type flywheel. Vegascarts sells the comp cams HD springs many of us use.

Re: GX390 Club Car Want RPMs for More Speed
Haha...yeah it could be an easy solution, IF I could find my dang 22mm socket!
Bought the flywheel (thanks for heads-up on the VC sale) and I already had the old style coil. I refuse to buy the socket when I KNOW that sucker is hiding somewhere in my garage. No hurries though, since she doesn't break up 'til about 26 mph. Fast enough..for now |

You might find a 15/16 socket though not perfect will get the nut off.
