Project Car - 1987 Royal Ride - 100% Custom 72V
I have moved this over from the Club car forum, and am reposting this here for starters...
So most importantly the story... I am a grown up farm kid, from Illinois, who now lives in Miami. The Elmco factory, in Cookesville, was ~15 miles from our family farm. I always thought they were the coolest golf carts and always wanted one... Flash forward 30+ years, and someone is fire sale-ing one here in Miami. Couldn't believe it. Had to have it! This is a 1987 Elmco Royal Ride 21E. It is an A87, (1987) chassis, which I am told is because it is a 4-seater, not the typical B-model. It has been upgraded to current technology - there is are modern-ish parts - no coils or resistors. I have owned ~6 carts: 1998 DS, 2010 Precedent, currently a 2016 Star EV Sport 4+2, and many others. The current Star, just because it is headache free & reliable. I am buying this knowing that it will not be easy and will be tackling this with my 8 yr old son. I am very mechanically & electrically inclined (which I am certain will be challenged) and he is quickly becoming the same. In these crazy times a garage project in Florida is great winter goal. I am going to do my best to document as much as possible with my son. The goal is ultimately make an amazing Cullinan-like golf cart that has the vintage flair, while teaching my son even more about vehicles, and maybe some amateur videography and editing. I KNOW that I will be looking to this amazing forum from time to time for assistance & guidance. I hope you all enjoy what I am expecting will be an amazing project! Wish me luck! |

Re: Project Car - 1987 Royal Ride - 100% Custom 72V
Night one was basic strip down of the front seat, battery compartment, lights, accessories and bolt-ons. Harrison is very interested in the project. It is my intent to keep him involved as long as possible! Many of the fasteners are 30+ years old and removal has been a chore, but we are getting it done. I have lots of cut off tools, which have def come in handy!

Night Two was tear down of all remaining body, electrical, accessories and misc. Harrison is really getting into the challenges with tearing apart something "old!"
Tonight (Friday) we strip all of the suspension, and hopefully end up with a bare frame to send out to soda blasting. Extensive modifications are intended to build a custom setup for batteries, and electrical components. |

Re: Project Car - 1987 Royal Ride - 100% Custom 72V
Finally, the build concept. I definitely encourage feedback...!
I am following in @dougrobling footsteps. I have the battery spec'd with RD Battery for a 72V pack. Should be placing the order later today. Its ~5-6 weeks with fabrication & shipping. That gives me 5-6 weeks to get nearly everything else complete. The cart will be a 600A Navitas AC with 5KW and all the other associated parts. All new HD F/R with remote rocker, 72V solenoid, and 2Ga wiring. Electronic foot pedal, all new wiring for 12V system. Planning to do the Rhox wiring harness modified to work with my setup, along with their column mounted light/horn controls. All lights will be custom fit for the cart, to include High/Low/DRL and hopefully sequential turn signals. 100% new suspension parts - shocks, bushings, etc.. All of the frame, lift parts and other metal/aluminum parts will be soda blasted and powder coated. All bright work that is not getting painted will be polished. My inspiration for the paint scheme is found in the photo. I am 100% certain that it will not be for everyone, but we live in Miami, and people will barely bat an eye! Going to do the white Modz 14" Gladiators with Blue accents. Thank you all for your contributions over the years to this forum, it has made this planning process very easy and increased my willingness to attack this project. It is your contributions that enable others to take on these projects! |

What a great thing to do with your son! I love the color scheme you're going for! Fits perfect in South Florida! Looking forward to seeing the project.

We finished complete tear down today. Everything is apart. Frame is stripped of every bolt and nut. All body parts removed and stripped. Planning to have the frame soda blasted this week, and may even get body out to paint. Final specs for the 72V lithium battery figured out today. Should be released by Monday. So much to do!!

Parts are coming in, fiberglass modified for new lights, and frame on the stand ready for major frame mods/reinforcement to fit the 72V pack.
Coming along great. Almost all parts ordered, and more coming in each day. About 5 weeks to get it all done before the battery arrives! Teaching an 8 yr old to weld this week - should be interesting!! |

That is really cool! I think the both of you will learn a lot with this adventure. Try not to push him too hard or he'll lose interest. That is a neat looking cart, he will enjoy it when his legs get long enough to drive it...AND he'll know how to fix what he tears up!
