It's kind of hard to explain but, the float bowl usually only holds about a quarter of the capacity of the bowl of gasoline in it. In other words if the bowl is 1 inch tall, the standard amount of gasoline will be about 1/4 of an inch or so.

The float has to be adjusted so the bowl does not get more gas than this. At this point the float will almost set on top of the gas. It's like a small but empty fishing boat setting on top of the water. Ther is not much of the boat in the water.

It is a trial & error adjustment until you get it running smooth and not flooding. If the float is letting too much gasoline into the bowl, the engine will run rich with black smoke or try to flood down from too much gas.

Hope this helps..........

hi, yes this does help..right now it may be too high as not only do i get a small pop back through the carb but an ocasional puff of black smoke. I did also notice while cranking the cart over in maint mode that fuel will kinda spray out the air cleaner side of it..my thoughts were float too high. I will readjust and see what happens. Thanks for the reply!!!

Sorry I'm late with this reply. My manual says that with the carb in an inverted position, the float should be 1/4 to 5/16" above the body when the tang on the float arm contacts the inlet needle. If adjustment is needed always bend the tang, not the float arm.
