Motor running hot - need help
I have a 93 Club Car DS, which I completely re-wired and converted a couple of years ago. Put in a kit from scottyb with 700amp FSIP controller, potentiometer, solenoid, HD forward and reverse switch, and 2g cables. 8 6v batteries.
All has been well until recently when my motor runs very, very hot. As in too hot to touch and I get that electric burning smell. Well, obviously, Im not running it anymore and it's parked until I figure this out. Controller is warm to hot to the touch, but not nearly as bad as the motor. The motor you just cannot touch at all. The motor is the original stock motor. Ive checked all the connections and cleaned them. No problem there, and they really weren't dirty as I keep them clean. Batteries almost new. Plenty of water, keep it charged with DPI charger, etc. I'm thinking something is causing it to work harder than before. I've looked at the brakes, but really don't know what I am looking for. Maybe they are dragging? But, the speed is the same. It happens at low speeds and high speeds. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks. |

Re: Motor running hot - need help
If I was you I'd check to see if there was a electric motor repair shop in town and let them take a look at it. Who knows maybe it just needs a set of brushes. If that isn't available send it off to Plum Quick. As for the brakes if you can push it by hand you're OK.

Yeah, if there was such a shop, I would do that. But there is not. When you say that if you can press the brakes by hand they are OK, what do you mean? Are you talking about the pedal?

Re: Motor running hot - need help
Sorry I meant that if you can push the cart on flat level ground by hand the brakes are not dragging.

Gotcha. is it possible that the motor just needs some tlc? Has an oil leak I just noticed. Anyone know how to check and refill?

If you have not been pushing your cart to work hard, another possibility since your cart is lifted is that the U-bolts on the rear lift are getting loose and it is allowing the rear axle to twist/rotate causing the brakes to drag during acceleration (the brake cables gets pulled). Check to make sure those U-bolts are tight and that the axle has not rotated. |

Re: Motor running hot - need help
Agree with Sergio. The 700 amp controller and the stock motor are a combination destined to fail. The stock motor will not last with that current level. I ran the stock motor on my PDS cart for a while with the DCX600 and it ran fine but would definitely got very hot. Replaced it with a D&D and it runs cool as can be.

Re: Motor running hot - need help
The motor doesn't have oil. But it is old and had been run hard with all that power. Its probably nearing the end of its serviceable life. A rebuild to stock will likely result in the same result. Time for an upgrade!

Re: Motor running hot - need help
Also if the brakes were dragging that much you'd see discoloration in the drums from extreme heat....and the brake shoes would be glazed
