![]() I am fixing a 89 or 86 Melex gas cart and I need to know if this engine is going to work.
http://www.smallenginesurplus.com/te...93-p-3883.html If you noticed, it's on sale right now about 100+ off so this is a great deal. A few questions I have are: Will this motor have good torque or will it take a while to get up to speed? Will this motor be powerful enough to push this heavy monster up hills sufficiently? Lastly, will this motor be strong enough to push around this hefty cart without putting a lot of strain on the motor? I don't want to break something because the cart weighs so much. For those of you familiar with this cart, will this motor even fit under the seat? D: Here are pic's of the cart. ![]() ![]() |

![]() That may be a very minimal power plant, not sure it is carburetor for variable speeds or if it has a shaft that will fit available clutches......? A 10hp single is not my best choice but it may work for you, depending upon what your expectations are.

![]() What do you mean minimal power plant? I don't really know much about engines so could you please verify what you mean by variable speeds and shaft that will fit available clutches? What could I expect from this motor?

![]() The engine is too small.
It's carburetor is designed for a single speed like a lawnmower. It may stall, cutout, and otherwise perform poorly when you try to rev it up and down constantly like in a golf cart application. Not all crankshaft ends are alike, you have to make sure the clutch you have fits the engine you are looking at otherwise you are looking for a clutch that costs 2Xs what the motor cost. I don't think this is a good choice. A lot of guys have used the Harbor Freight 13 and 16hp economy engines. I put one in a Club Car once... I don't rate this as a beginner level project, modifying any engine to fit a golf cart requires modification to the fuel air and exhaust systems and the motor mounting and drive belt will need to be changed. Lots of information on the site if you google Honda clone. |

Basically you are re-engineering the drive system, I was surprised how much modification was required when I did this .... once. ![]() |

![]() Smooth THC, very smooth, you should give people the courtesy of at least one mistake.
There's nothing wrong with that motor, go for it. |

![]() That engine has a recoil start and a fixed speed of 3750 rpm. So you are going to lift the seat, pull the cord and hope to clamber aboard as the thing roars off towards to horizon.
You should peruse the big block section and see what guys have already made work but your budget needs to be close to $1000 than $100. Dave |
