Default Briggs 23HP- Starter Issue

Hi Folks, I think the answer to this question is 'you've bought the wrong starter' although I just wanted to check with you all just in case there is something more obvious. The starter on my 23hp Briggs gave up the ghost the other day so I order and fitted a new one. Images attached. They look identical although when the new one powers up it engages, doesn't disengage and just continues to spin. Engine never turns over. Although they look the same the numbers on the casings are different. The one that worked originally is the 5776N. Can it be an alignment issue or is it as simple as being the wrong type? Thanks!

Same teeth count? Same gear material?

Did you bench test it before installing?

Solenoid good?

This is the heavy duty replacement. It involves a little sheet metal trimming, and a couple of longer bolts. Almost a must have if you've got a cam without the compression release...
