Re: Planning Engine Swap
IF you degraded the adhesive holding the magnets to the flywheel not a good situation. That happened on my Briggs Opie so I found another flywheel on Ebay

I believe there are two ring gears with the 4 spaced bolt holes

I think the 391362 is for the Briggs opposed twin

Re: Planning Engine Swap
From my research, the 18hp Vanguard would have had either a 14 tooth or 16 tooth starter gear
I think the reason why the PO shredded the teeth on the flywheel gear ring is because the stock start failed and they replaced it with a 15 tooth gear starter I found a perfectly working 16 tooth Briggs rebuilt starter locally for $15 The 14 tooth was too large of a gear spacing and would not have worked Time to drill out the four rivets on the bad flywheel gear ring and order a new part |

Re: Planning Engine Swap
I am buying a used/bad Briggs 18hp today for $60, that will be used as a parts donor for the air cleaner assembly, misc brackets, carb and throttle linkages, flywheel, and some other misc hardware that I will need for my 18hp engine
The remaining parts will be removed and parted out to recoup funds |

Re: Planning Engine Swap
I bought a used Briggs v-twin OHV service manual to read through and help get the engine up and running
When I know its fully operational, I will do some maintenance like oil/filter change, new spark plugs, fuel lines, and new fuel pump |

Re: Planning Engine Swap
I keep reading about exhaust restriction rings on the 16/18hp Briggs Vanguard
20hp Briggs Vanguard does not come with them and when coupled with the 2 barrel 20hp carb, more power can be made Does anyone have pics of the restriction rings? I cannot see anything inside the exhaust ports on the heads |

Re: Planning Engine Swap
My current good Briggs does not have the restriction rings
I took these out of the salvage Briggs just for reference |
