Default Projected life expectancy of battery (JohnnieB)

JohnnieB did this comparison in a thread back in February of this year:

The projected life expectancy with proper battery maintenance for various batteries:
Autocraft GC2 (115AH) = about 2.98 years or annual cost of $153.22
Trojan T-605 (210AH) = about 5.32 years or annual cost of $152.19
Trojan T105 (225AH) = about 5.60 years or annual cost of $144.74

----
Is it a pure function of AH? Based on some tinkering I did, I don't think so?

I need batteries and from what I read Crown or Trojan are the way to go.
What about a projected life expectancy of Crown CR-220 and CR-235?

Thanks!

Take a good look at US Battery also. I just put the US145's in mine and love them!

It's all about love and care. I got 9 years to the month out of of the used Exides I bought, but now have 8 T-105s.

I don't plan on leavin' so if I've erred, y'all will know.

Love and care "can (help)" beat QA/QC.

1. No, battery life expectancy is not a pure function of AH and the list of variables that influence the useful lifespan of a battery is long and even the definition of "Useful Lifespan" is subjective. However, if the batteries are to be used in the same cart that is driven the same number of miles per trip over the same terrain, given the same care, charged on the same schedule with the same charger and used in the same climatic conditions, AH becomes the major contributing factor for longevity.

Studies done by battery manufacturers show that the average SoC (State of Charge) determines the number of charge cycles their products will endure. Attached is a composite graph of Average SoC vs Charge cycles based on data published by Exide, Trojan and US Battery. The numbers vary a bit, but they all show that batteries kept in a higher state of charge have more charge cycles available.

Since it takes the same amount of energy (Watts) to move a cart from Point-A to Point-B and Watts are Amps time Volts, it also takes the same number of Amps if the voltage stays the same and the number of Amps removed from a battery pack is the same for any given trip, regardless of the AH rating of the batteries.

Therefore, at the end of each and every trip, a battery with an higher AH capacity will have a higher SoC than a battery with a lesser AH capacity. Which in turn, means that higher AH batteries last longer in the same golf cart driven and maintained by the same owner in the same geographical location, than lower AH batteries would.

----------
2. Both Crown and Trojan are amongst the best. If you could get 5.6 years out of Trojan T-105 batteries (Average SoC of 70%), you should get about 5.5 years from CR-220 and about 5.9 years from CR-235 batteries.

Cost per year would be determined by the overall cost of having the batteries sitting next to your cart.

Just a minor correction. Work done is Watt Hours not Watts. Watts is power not work done.
