Fuel mixture on 73 harley
I get conflicting fuel mixture ratios in different reading materials. My manual says to use only Harley oil and I understand that is part of the game to up their sales. But now that they are no longer around the other alternative in the manual states you can temporarily use 40 weight non detergent oil with regular gas. It states 2.5 oz. per gallon. I want my engine to have the best protection available. What is the best for lubrication and do you agree with the 40 wt. I would rather have have the mix have a little extra oil rather than mixing marginal. I would appreciate opinions from those of you that know Harley gas cars well. Also what is the expected life of the gas engines if you maintain them well and run them respectively. Thank you for any help.

Oh boy this starts the old F ord Chev stuff.
I mix every thing I own at 50/1 other than the 180 horse and larger that I mix at 40/1. A good name brand oil. |

any good quality 2 stroke oil at a ratio of 40:1 would be fine. I use to run Klotz oil in my 2 stroke banshees.

Re: Fuel mixture on 73 harley
I just came across this thread, for what it's worth, I've been toying with the mix on my 79 D cart, and 8oz of good 2 stroke oil (I used good outboard oil) to 5 gallons gives the best result. No smoking and smooth running.
When I first got it, I did the 40wt mix and it smoked like crazy, but I figured a little extra was better than not enuf lubrication. |

Off Subject, but what did you use for your floor pans? Did you have a metal fabricator make them or do it yourself?

Re: Fuel mixture on 73 harley
My son has a friend who is a metal fabricator. He took the drivers side floor pan and used it as a pattern to make a pair as they're identical mirror images other than the cut out for the pedals. They fit like original equipment, other than the front outside corner where the leg guard mounts. We had to grind a tiny bit off the metal to make that corner round enuf.
I also do vinyl graphics, so the decals and such I make myself, including the Harley bar and shield that says either Golf Cars or Golf Carts. Can make them any size. |
