Clear Coating Over OEM Paint
I just picked up a "new" body for my club car (tan) but wanted to get a deeper gloss on it, plus there were a few scuffs on the surface from shipping.
So, can I clear over the OEM paint? And if so, what type of paint and prep would I need to do? Thanks Cuz |

Re: Clear Coating Over OEM Paint
Is it fiberglass or newer yet = plastic? There are special paints ( bonders ) for plastic.

wet sand, adhesion promoter, any automotive paint you want... then any automotive clear coat you want=)
it's ALLLLLLLL in the prep though... i sand blast plastics before i start with aluminum oxide 70 grit to get in every nook and cranny |

If you are JUST trying to clear over the OEM paint, then you'll want to be VERY careful when lightly wetsanding the factory finish before applying the clear. You can get flex additives so that it won't crack if you bump things or lean on it too hard.

Re: Clear Coating Over OEM Paint
yeah he's right.
most automotive clears/paints nowadays have a flex additive already in there. i like using PPG... house of kolor... alsa corp... dupont... with a cart you'll probably be fine with the paint as it is. for atvs we use adhesion promoter and a flexible primer to help it hold up here's black we shot on a test piece for our site. no flex additive added... just promoter, flexible primer, house of kolor base black |

It's amazing how much paint tech has changed over the years. I'm surprised that is flexing that much without any significant damage (other than a mild rub line).
