Have I bit off more than I can chew?
I started the dismantling of the cart today, getting ready for the transformation. I pulled everything off that will get in the way of prepping and painting. I washed it well with "Awsome" cleaner and pressure washed it. I'll start taping and sanding tomorrow evening. I'm going with Crimson Tide red as the base coat and just a shade lighter for the flames. My windshield, lights, horn, mirror, and turn signals will be in on Wednesday, so I'm getting excited about how I "hope" it turns out. Going to take my time and try to do everything right. I'm going to use the Duplicolor brand for everything except the Bulldog Adhesion Promoter.

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
I hope I haven't bit off more than I can chew! I'm working on the nose of the cart first.
I sanded, used paint thinner to get rid of any residue, sprayed two coats of Bull Dog Adhesion Promoter, sprayed 5 coats of the base coat, sanding lightly w/ 1000 grit paper between coats. I'm just having trouble getting the paint as even as I want it. Am I not going to get it perfect, or at least close to it? I put one more coat on it before coming in for the night. I'll let it sit until tomorrow evening, lightly sand and see what it looks like then. I'll lightly sand then and start putting down the pinstripe tape to outline the flames. Am I doing something wrong? Do I put a couple of coats of clear before starting the flames? |

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
Here's a before pic... It's a 2007 TXT PDS.
I think I have some good coats on it (Cherry Red is what's on the can or Crimson Tide Red is the color we are going for), but I'm not sure if it just needs a good buffing to blend the color or what before starting the flames. |

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
You can add more reducer to keep the paint "wet" longer and hold the gun a little closer to the surface and at a 90 deg. angle when spraying...its a fine line between a nice wet coat and runs...but the clear will make all the difference in the world, espacially if you take the time to wet sand with approx. 1500 grit before clearing. If its really hot and humid...more reducer will definately be needed than what they reccomend for a nice climate controlled spray booth

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
I'm not a paint expert. I have painted some cars with very good results. If you have put 5 base coats on and are not happy with it, you may want to go backwards just a little to smooth it out now. I would get some 400 or 600 grit and block sand it wet. As long as you change directions with the block you shouldn't cut off the edges. This will flatten out all the lumps and orange peel giving you a smooth painted surface. Then you can spray another base coat and go forward from there. I wouldn't spray any clear between colors. That's for the finished gloss...

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
Thanks guys. I'll get back to it tomorrow. I'm using all of the good advice here I've read so much. If I can just get it applied now.

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
About the wet sanding.... After reading just about every post on this forum about painting now (slight exaggeration), I'm wondering about the wet sanding.
1) Does that mess up the tape job you have on the trim parts? I mean, do you have to re-tape after wet sanding? 2) What, exactly, does the wet sanding do that dry sanding doesn't? I'm sanding with 1000 grit wet/dry paper. I haven't wet sanded just because of concern for the tape. Does it take out uneven paint layers? BTW, I'm using 3M Automotive Paint Tape (Green) That is my biggest concern with my paint right now. The "layers" of dark and light. How do I "level" it out. Now, I have waves in the paint. Might not be as noticeable after the flames cover most of the nose and the clear is applied, but I'm a real nitpicker when it comes to my projects and I don't want to apply the clear and still see the wavy paint job. Another thing.... what is Tony talking about when he mentions "orange peels" in the post above? |

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
Nobody paints these bodies on the cart .... except EarlShibe You making it harder on yourself by not removing the body completely and doing away with the masking and go to the wet sand . Wet sanding is 10xs as fine and it is more effective because the water clears the paper. You must use wet sanding paper. Go ahead do it you'll like it Drill out some rivets and remove a bolt or 2 and put the bodies on some saw horses.... I hope this helps, I'm not a painter but ....

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
Thanks, Scotty. I believe I'll be ahead by taking off the rear panel. I'm probably trying to get it too perfect on the front because the flames will probably cover most of the color imperfections.
I had already removed the bag well on the back, and that thing had a ton of rivets. Can't be that many more to remove to free up the back. |
