Default Alltrax 400 USB to RS232 Cable

Could some of you cart builder guys tell me why you have to use a certain USB to RS232 cable?
I have one that looks just like the one I've seen in some kits offered by Alltrax sellers like evdrives, but when i hook it up I get a "Motor Controller Not Found" error message. I do not have the driver cd for my cable and I tried the one listed to be downloaded.

They (Alltrax) recomend a $40 cable from Radio Shack, kind of high for a more than likely one time use.

By the way, my cart is a PDS with a Alltrax 400 DCX.

Thanks for your help.

"Motor Controller Not Found" is a common error if you have not powered up the controller BEFORE launching the software.

Not having the right driver for your cable is a hurdle that you need to overcome

Yeah I know, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that.

Search the internet for driver that matches the cable and your operating system ...... if that all sounds Greek, maybe $40 is worth it for a cable with a CD driver you can resell it for half when you are done????

They shouldn't have sold you a serial cable for that much.

You can get a cheap one for MUCH less, especially for one time use. Make sure you get one with some sort of driver, and make sure it's installed.

Then plug it into your machine and controller, open up the software, THEN power your controller on.

NO this is wrong.

You must power up the controller (green or red LED is okay) and then open the program. If you open the program with the cable installed and the control LED not lit up you will get the 'cant find controller' error.

I downloaded 3 drivers from the net and still got the error message, guess I'm buying the freaking cable.

Yes I powered up the controller before starting the program, still couldn't find it.

Thanks guys

That's what I meant.

My apologies to OP.

Actually I figured you did know how to use the program & just posted it backwards. But in light of the basic level of this thread I thought it was important to set the record right.
