Re: Vanguard 23 Carburators
I forgot to add:
I believe the 34mm carb is too big for this engine for just putting around. For wide open performance, like in a mudboat for example, it's fantastic. But for a golf cart that gets used at low rpm and idles a lot, I think the carb is just too large. The main problem I saw with this setup is that there was always a high amount of black soot in the exhaust pipe, so that's unburned fuel. The more soot, the more rich the a/f mixture is. This is by no means scientific, but if I cleaned the tailpipe with carb cleaner really good, it would only take approx 10 minutes of run time to get a pretty thick black coating. Because of the rich mixture at low rpm, one cylinder would always foul out. After replacing spark plugs many times, and trying 3 different brands, I would still see the plugs foul out at random times. Sometimes it would happen on one ride, sometimes it would take 3 or 4 rides to foul. Nonetheless, the fouling was occurring and was frustrating. The rich mixture was not able to be fixed with the pilot circuit. I had the pilot screw adjusted perfectly for idle with the jet that came with the carb, and it would idle smoothly at 1100 rpm. It did have a tendency to settle to idle pretty slowly. I tried the next size pilot jet and it wouldn't even idle no matter how I adjusted it. Just wanted to give the info for anyone who thinks they might want to try this mod. I'm thinking a 30mm carb would do much better for better driveability, maybe even a 28mm. The stock 2 barrel carb is 24mm per cylinder, so a 30mm or 28mm would be a larger amount of air/fuel. Good luck to anyone who wants to try this. I definitely think a Mikuni is the way to go, but just smaller than 34mm. |

Re: Vanguard 23 Carburators
Just did some digging and I found that some atv's come with mikuni CV in 28mm and 30mm. For my 16hp Vanguard build I think I will try that size and see how the throttle response is. I'm a fan of those carbs because they are very forgiving with the throttle position and almost self correct based on vacuum, not just on throttle position.

Re: Vanguard 23 Carburators
Think you should try a flat side carb next. The throttle response should be way better.
