80's Textron Charger Problem
Greetings all Charger Gurus,
I have an mid-80's Textron Charger that does not charge. I am familiar with electronic devices. I do get the relay click when plugging in the charger to the cart. When I turn on the manual timer, a get a very low transformer hum with a slightly louder surging hum around the amp meter. No amp draw is shown on the meter. I have ohmed out the xformer with all windings appearing "normal" and no shorts indicated. I did find that the larger capacitor reads out at 20mf rather than 70mf as written on the can. I can get only 25-30vac across the cap. I tried to sub a 35mf cap but the a/c reading across the cap remained about the same (I didn't expect much of a change anyway but thought I might note a slight change). My question is, will a new cap solve my problem or is there anything else going on here? Does anyone know what the voltage should be across the cap? Thanks in advance for anyone who can help out. Oh yes, only a couple of DC volts at the output. Sonnytex |

Welcome to the forum sonnytex...............
What does the charger do when plugged into the cart? The diodes and relays are common items to go bad. Check the diodes. Obviously the relay is good. |

Re: 80's Textron Charger Problem
Hi Rusty,
Sorry, I should have said the diodes appear good - both show .495 volt drop and biased the other way show infinite. Best I can tell the relay seems to be passing voltage when energized. Any idea what kind of voltage I should see across the 70mf capacitor? Sonny |

Re: 80's Textron Charger Problem
About 480 volts across the cap.

Re: 80's Textron Charger Problem
Humm, 480vac sounds a bit too much - the cap is only rated at 350vac. I was thinking more like 200-250vac. I guess I should go ahead and replace the cap and hope for the best. Thanks for helping.

Re: 80's Textron Charger Problem
Sorry Sonny........ I may have been looking at the wrong schematic.
Which charger do you have? Can you take a picture of it and post it here? Inside and Outside. Is it an AUTOMATIC charger or Manual TIMER charger? |

Rusty,
It is a manual timer. Attached are the photos you requested. Sonny |

Re: 80's Textron Charger Problem
Looks like it's been "moist" at some point.
That charger is manual timer but it does shut off automatically. That charger can be upgraded to "fully" automatic with a new timer board from Lester. I know this probably is not helpful unless the timer board turns out to be the culprit. |

Re: 80's Textron Charger Problem
Thanks for the tips - it does show some signs of being weathered. I removed the board and went over it very closely with a magnify glass. Fortunately I saw no evidence of corrosion, even between the IC legs. Again, thanks for the thoughts.

Re: 80's Textron Charger Problem
Sonny, thanks for the very good photos. This model is notorious for the transformers burning out. It does show signs of some of the windings being hot.
So, basicly check it for about 50 volts or so before the diodes. Without a load, the dc voltage should be 40 something also. You will probably need the correct schematic. The board could be bad too. And in this charger boards go bad as often as diodes and relays. Sorry I can't be of more help. |
