2011 Star charging
My charger is not working properly anymore. While researching chargers. I have become confused with different style plugs. The charger that came with used cart has a plug added to it. Could someone look at pics attached and tell me if they are correct for this model? The 3rd pin it just used as a disconnect while charging, is this correct? It is difficult to find chargers with Star plugs. Can I use ones from other 48v models and just change plug end?
Thanks Ron |

Re: 2011 Star charging
Hi Ron. You are correct about the 3rd pin. It's used for a charger lockout, cutting power so you can't drive while plugged in. The picture you have of the charge port looks like it's been over heating and has melted. The picture of the charge cord, last one is a Clubcar charger plug. They are different and not compatible with each other.

Re: 2011 Star charging
So it looks like I need to change charge socket and plug. Does the charge socket look original? If I do need to change socket. can I just install a style that is easy to find? and find matching plug for it? As long as it is for a 48v.
Thanks |

Re: 2011 Star charging
Yes, the charge socket is original to Star. I do not see why it would be a problem using a different style, as long as the amperage rating is at least the same or higher. You will also have to make sure the smaller wires that go the switch(charger lockout) on the back of the charge port are either left attached to the switch or connected together. The cart won't run if they are disconnected.
I do have to ask about the 3rd picture you posted, is that the charger you are planing on using ? If yes, that charger will not charge your batteries correctly. This charger does not put out enough current to properly charge the battery pack. I have had customers who bought this type of charger and ruin their batteries, requiring new batteries and charger. The OEM charger for Star is a DPI, set to the battery type installed in the cart. I hope this helps - Phil. |

Phil, what is the difference between that plug and a Club Car? Looks the same to me.
Edit: I see you say it is Club Car. My mistake. |

Re: 2011 Star charging
So its a common issue that the original star charger plug and receptacle melt/burn. I switch out the plug and cord to a LESTER style old school plug which is tried and true. I by pass the lock out feature so if that is important to you, my way would not be the way you would want to go.
