1986 Marathon compression
I'm working on a buddies cart (1986 Marathon) and it seems to run great in forward but wont start in reverse. Have spark in both fwd & rev however compression test is showing 110 in forward direction and 50 in reverse direction. Would this indicate crank seal bad? or?? What are we missing here?

Re: 1986 Marathon compression
Seals don't affect compression.
Changing direction puts a different side load on the piston. I would be inclined to think rings and out of round cylinder. |

Re: 1986 Marathon compression
Thanks....makes sense. I’ll see if I can get motor out and opened up this weekend to bore gauge for out of round and check rings.

Re: 1986 Marathon compression
It's also weird to think that reverse would wear out before forward.
You could remove the exhaust pipe, and take a good look at the piston before removing everything. You will find the 85 manual here. https://buggiesgonewild.com/showthre...=105501&page=3 |

Re: 1986 Marathon compression
Thanks for the help Cart around...sure enough when we pulled the piston she was a bit scored with the rings collapsed in 2 areas. New piston kit and honing the cylinder and BAM she's good as new!!

Re: 1986 Marathon compression
Glad to hear that. I was slightly concerned about that diagnosis.

Re: 1986 Marathon compression
Do you mind telling me where you got the parts? I am about to pull the engine on my 86.
