2) how many amps does the same 3.1 HP motor draws at 48 volts.

Every cart will be different and it varies depending on load. The amp draw will be less with a higher voltage. If your just starting to move the amp draw will be high, if your moving the amp draw is less.

thanks for the reply but I was looking for someone who did a 48 volt upgrade from 36v. I was hoping someone out there did the upgrade and did before and after amp test

Im pretty sure I still have my amp clamp piece for my meter. If I do I will also check the amps for you on the old cables and new cables when I get to conversion. At what location should I grab the cable reading..or a couple different readings...I like to play and tinker and see results too

Im not sure but those clamp ons are for ac power. I just tried on my golf cart and tryed to get # while at take off and wot had on a 400 amp ac clamp on meter it read 1.7 so i guss it dont work . from memory (about 20 years ago) ac travles around the wire but DC travles through wire

All current regardless flows around the strand!
Higher strand count in same ga cable will flow more amps.

For DC (Direct Current) in typical conductor material like copper, aluminum, silver, etc., the conductor's charges are flowing distributed uniformly throughout the material.


For 60Hz AC (alternating current) in typical conductor material, the current is concentrated in the outer few centimeters of the cable. So if your cable diameter is less than one cm or so, then the current flows everywhere inside.

However, as the frequency increases, the current tends to get channeled closer to the surface of the conductor. At frequencies well above 60Hz, the current in the center of the conductor can be considered non-existent for all practical purposes. That is why radar units (which operate at frequencies anywhere from 1GHz to 15 GHz or more) usually transmit their eletrical energy through waveguides, which are really hollow tubes, either circular or rectangular. At those frequencies, no current exists anywhere except at the surface, so the hollow tube is effectively just the skin with no center. At UHF and microwave frequencies we can significantly improve the conductivity of copper cables and waveguides by applying a thin coating of silver.
