Voltage Reducer wiring question
Installed 48v to 12v battery reducer on 05 DS Club Car. Wired directely to battery pack. I have 48 volts going into it and am getting 12 volts out of the reducer but it is hot to the touch with no load on it. I'm sure this is not normal, did I wire it wrong?

Re: Voltage Reducer wiring question
I can't see why a reducer would be getting hot, unless it is supplying current to something.
Can you test the current draw to see if you have an unknown load? It sounds like you have it directly wired to the battery and not on the key switch. If there is any parasitic draw from the reducer, it will run your battery down over time. If it is getting hot, I suspect it is drawing a decent amount of current. |

Re: Voltage Reducer wiring question
Don't wire it to the key switch unless it is the type made for that. If it is wired correctly and getting hot with no load it is bad.

Re: Voltage Reducer wiring question
If you read the label on the factory 16-12 volt reducers the warn that the surface is hot, reason for being mounted to frame to help disapate heat. Also most reducers have fins to help disapate the heat. So yes they will get hot. You are using resistance to lower the voltage, that creates heat.

Re: Voltage Reducer wiring question
Well, how HOT is it? Of course it creates heat. Should not be scalding hot.

Re: Voltage Reducer wiring question
I recently installed one to my 48v pack and did not like how warm it got, so I wired in a toggle switch to shut it down when not in use.

Re: Voltage Reducer wiring question
Thank you guys for the replys. This thing is getting hot enough that you would not want to keep your hand on it long.
I like the toggle switch idea. I use it for a sprayer and can turn it on when needed. |

What kind of sprayer? What does it draw?

Re: Voltage Reducer wiring question
Camp Buggie, which reducer do you have and how is the toggle switch wired? I purchased the blue 30 amp reducer from Scotty B and would like to wire in a toggle switch but the directions were not clear enough.
