Default Valve adjustment

I was hoping someone out there could advise me on the proper way to make valve adjustment on a Yamaha G-8. I understand the setting is .004 and made when cold, but, I'm not sure if the adjustment is made at TDC or when the opposite valve is in compression or somewhere else.

Thanks, George

Saber cat put the tools down and think for two seconds. Do you have a feeler gauge or a micrometer.
