Default Re: RXV chassis based road car - Update

It's been quite a while since I posted on this. Progress had been slow because of health issues and other projects. Now that my EV design business is closed, that takes most outside projects out of the mix.

I was trying to buy a new 2Five rear axle, to give me access to factory rear disc brakes. That ended in failure, as the 610911 part number from my 2Five Service Parts Manual is not valid. E-Z-GO provided me with a new part number, 618150, but I was unable to get my local E-Z-GO dealer to get me a price, let alone order it for me. I gave up on that and decided to just go with the Jakes hydraulic disc brake kit for the front axle. I ordered the kit last week, and it arrived 3 days ago.

Bob, I have calipers, rotors and caliper brackets for the rear axle from hydraulic brakes kits I was making. The calipers and rotors are Ausco. You would need hubs and would need to adapt to your actuation system. I don't know if the master cylinder that came with your Jakes kit would work or not. let me know if you are interested. This looks like a cool build!

This is what I have wanted to do since the first time I saw a Legend Car. I always wanted to pull up to a light in one just to make people scratch their heads. Good luck with it and I will be watching.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. This thread is in a forum section that I don't often go to.

I can get a larger bore version of the Jakes master cylinder. I think it uses the same mount, since its made by the same manufacturer. I would definitely prefer to have 4 wheel disc brakes. I have no problem doing most fabrication, as long as it's something that one person can do.

Do your caliper mounts clamp around the axle tubes, or are they weld-on?

The reason I had given up on rear brakes is the electric RXV axle has nothing to mount calipers to, not even drum brake flanges to bolt an adapter to. Welding on caliper mounts is not beyond my abilities, just getting them positioned right would be difficult without all of the hydraulics in place and using rotors mounted to the hubs to slip the calipers onto. It would require a helper to depress the brake pedal to hold the calipers aligned while tack-welding some home-made caliper mounts in place.

The struts I had installed were from my wrecked 2012 RXV, and they were not the right struts for the 2009. I used the lower strut hole, which lowered the front spindles by 1.5", giving a slight lift of the chassis front. The driver side strut was broken in the wreck and was welded back together. The alignment was fair, but not what I would want on a street car capable of 45+ MPH. I ordered a pair of brand new struts for the 2009 chassis yesterday. They are scheduled for delivery today. E-Z-GO parts has a pre-summer 20% discount running, promo code PRESUM20 so I used it. Free FedEx shipping to boot!

The new struts arrived, so I installed them to the road car frame. All new A-Arms, A-Arm tubes, bushings, Kingpin tubes, hardware, and the new Jakes front spindles with the caliper mounts.

Here's a few pics of the installed parts.

I had a busy day clearing trees from the roads that were downed by storms. Big trees were blowing over most of the day

I finally had the chance to install the Jakes front disc brakes on my project Road Car. Here are pics of what it looks like so far.

I'm not familiar with deals gap. It's probably near here, but I have not really explored much of my area. I tend to either stay around my own property, or travel to far away locations. I probably know my way around Washington DC and California better than my own region. Heck, I spent more time touring manufacturing facilities in China than I've spent exploring my own area!

Someone in DC decided to put me on the Presidential Advisory Board this past week. After months of advising, it was interesting to find out that one of my suggestions had made into the AHCA legislation passed by congress.

I'm at the point that I need the body panels in order to measure, mark, and cut the aluminum required to build the floor pan and framework that will support the body panels.

I'm planning for the trip to Charlotte NC to pick up the body panels, bumpers ,bumper extensions, windshield, ect.

I bought a 48" X 55" X 3/16" plate of aluminum to fabricate a skid plate from. This skid plate will fasten to the underside of the wishbone, providing the driver with some protection from road debris. It will also provide a surface for mounting the throttle and brake pedal assemblies in their new locations. The skid plate will extend from the front of the forward leaf spring mounts, forward to the front of the car. I must dismantle everything down to the bare wishbone again in order to do this.
